DeKalb School Gardens Harvest Summer Success

DeKalb school gardens are growing wild!  Only 5 weeks into the school year, DeKalb students are reaping some spectacular harvests after nurturing gardens through the summer.

Oakcliff Elementary Takes Home First Prize

Tyler Weaver, Oakcliff teacher, reports that his students' Cucurbita pepo hybrids (also known as Bumpkin pumpkins) took home first place in the Fruits and Vegetables section of the Horticultural Division at the 47th Annual Yellow Daisy Festival Flower Show at Stone Mountain Park (9/6/18-9/9/18).  Congrats!

Hightower Elementary Students and Monarch Larva Enjoy School Garden Snacks

Angela Mickle at Hightower Elementary sent in photos of their fall harvest and some special fall visitors.  They'll be raising monarchs in the classroom from larva found in their own school garden.  Planting milkweed in the school garden is a great way to attract these unique butterflies, who migrate between the US and Mexico.  For more information, visit Monarchs Across Georgia's website.

Cary Reynolds Starts a Garden

Cary Reynolds Elementary participated in Fernbank Science Center's School Master Gardener program in 2017/18.  They built and planted their garden in April 2018 and are now enjoying their first harvests.  Media Specialist Stephanie Jackson shared these photos and also keeps up a garden newsletter for the school and stocks Ingredient Magazine in the library to inspire young eaters.
